Original Pen and Ink Drawings
Many artists, especially illustrators, specialise in pen and ink drawings. Pen and ink has been used for centuries for sketching and smaller scale works - for example, some of Picasso's greatest preparatory and sketch works are pen and ink drawings.
Pen and ink can be monochrome (black and white) or coloured. Artists can also use watercolour alongside ink to add colour and vibrancy to their works. Ink can be watered down to create a wash similar to watercolour. However, many artists use a variety of specialist techniques to create texture and shade in the medium. These include cross hatching, where crossed lines are used to create depth - the closer together the lines, the denser the shaded area - and stippling, where small dots are used to create tone.
Our collection contains a variety of pen and ink drawings by various artists.
